plant in garden

The world's most popular hobby is Gardening.

It provides spiritual renewal, stress relief, life, and gives back food, herbs, flowers, and even medicines.

Research devoted to the growth of plants is amazing. From federally funded and university research to backyard gardeners, advancements in plant growing techniques are sky rocketing, and Holi moli is bringing first hand knowledge of cannabis growing to the growing community.

Tips for growing plants in containers:

  • Choose the right container - Pick a pot that's big enough for the plant's root system with drainage holes at the bottom. Plastic, ceramic, wood and metal pots all work well.
  • Use the right soil - Opt for a commercial potting mix or make your own by combining compost, perlite and vermiculite. The soil needs to be light and fast draining.
  • Pick suitable plants - Good choices for containers include tomatoes, peppers, herbs, leafy greens, dwarf fruit trees and compact annual flowers. Avoid root veggies and large plants like corn or squash.
  • Water thoroughly - Check soil moisture frequently and water when the top 1-2 inches become dry. Make sure excess water can drain out the bottom.
  • Fertilize regularly - Container plants have a limited soil volume so they need more feeding. Use a balanced liquid fertilizer every 1-2 weeks.
  • Give plenty of sun - Position containers in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, the more the better for most edibles.
  • Watch for pests and diseases - Check plants routinely and take action early if you see signs of problems. Container grown plants are more susceptible.
  • Prune and trim when needed - This keeps plants tidy, directs growth and improves productivity.
  • Overwinter carefully - Move containers to a sheltered spot before frost. Limit watering but don't allow pots to fully dry out.

  • Plastic pots - Affordable and lightweight. Choose opaque colors like black, green, or terracotta to prevent algae growth. Go for pots with drainage holes for indoor growing.
  • Ceramic pots - Porous material allows some air exchange. Glazed ceramic is very durable and comes in various sizes. Unglazed terra cotta helps wick away moisture.
  • Self-watering pots - Built-in water reservoirs reduce watering frequency. Look for plastic self-watering pots.
  • Hanging baskets - Great for displaying trailing plants or maximizing vertical space. Select sturdy hooks and chains.
  • Cache pots - A pot housed within a decorative outer container. Allows you to easily lift inner pot for watering.
  • Window boxes - Elongated containers ideal for windowsills. Ensure proper drainage.
  • Fabric grow bags - Allow air to permeate roots, made from felt or breathable synthetic. Need saucers to prevent leaks.
  • Metal containers - Such as copper or stainless steel. Tend to be on the smaller side for indoor use.
