Appearance/Size:

Small flies that do not usually measure more than 5 mm, they like to live inside the leaves and make galleries including killing all the leaves and stems entirely if not remediated.

Prefered Habitat:

The ideal climate for Leafminers to develop and to reproduce, is similar to that which occurs in a crop of , between 25 – 30 degree Celsius, with a relative humidity from 40% to 60%.

Reproduction:

Females drill eggs into leaves one at a time but often clustered (up to 350) hatch in two to six days. Undergo four molts, then pupate. In greenhouses, generations overlap so all stages can be found at any time.

Eat:

Flies feed on sap. Leafminers tunnel through tissue within leaves. This way they avoid THC and other insecticidal chemicals on the leaf surface. Most are maggots. Mines also provide entrances for fungi and other pathogens.
