Scientific Name: Orius insidiosus
Nickname: Minute Pirate Bug
Appearance/Size:
Adult pirate bugs are very small (only 1/8″ long). They are oval in shape and they are black with white patches on their wings.
Prefered Habitat:
They like warmer, constant temperatures. They thrive in greenhouses and wherever food sources are plentiful.
Reproduction:
Adults live 3-4 weeks. Females lay tiny eggs within plant tissues where the eggs can not easily be seen. The eggs hatch into nympHs. Very small, do not have any wings and can vary in color from yellow to orange to brown.
Eat:
Can consume up to 40 aphids/mites per day. They feed mostly on spider mites, thrips and their eggs, but will attack pretty much anything it comes across. Effective against thrips, mites, aphids, and small caterpillars.
Release Rates:
Release 100-2000 per acre depending on infestation. Side Notes: Lifespan of 3-4 weeks. Although they consume many types of pests, they bite humans, and they will feed on plant juices when their food supply becomes scarce.
