Trichomes

Trichomes are what creates the powerful effects we experience when we consume it. And are crucial for the health of the cannabis plant.

To the naked eye, these resin glands, which range in width from 10 to 100 micrometers, look like shiny, sticky crystals, giving buds their frosty appearance. Trichomes are the frost on your buds and the resin from which all your favourite Hash, BHO, Shatter and Wax are made. Trichomes begin to appear on marijuana as soon as the plants enter their flowering stage, toward the end of the lifecycle and just before the buds are ready for harvest.

Harvest marijuana plants according to trichome ripeness. If growing mostly Sativa hybrids , make sure that all resin glands are fully developed and 30% of them are amber before harvesting your plants. If you are growing mostly Indica hybrids, it is better to harvest your plants when the resin glands are completely developed but not fully ripen - before they turn amber - unless you want to be glued to your sofa.

Harvesting too early means less potent buds, with less essential oils and terpenes, so your buds will taste like grass or hey, even when correctly dried and cured.

The scientists have identified three categories of trichomes found on cannabis plants:

Bulbous trichomes

Capitate sessile trichomes

Capitate-stalked trichomes

The capitate-stalked variety, that’s of interest to weed lovers because they are the largest at 50-100µm wide and produce the oily medicinal/recreational goodies.

Because they are filled with resin, when trichomes break, they release the sticky oil inside. This is what gives some marijuana buds their stickiness. The more trichomes there are, the more resin they will release when handled roughly.
