Eugenol

Eugenol is a phenolic compound

That occurs in trace amounts within certain cannabis strain chemovars.

This aromatic constituent carries a smell often described as spicy, woodsy, smoky sweet - similar to clove oil. Some also detect hints of allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg. The scent is quite pungent and biting.

Beyond cannabis, eugenol appears abundantly across unrelated plants - from cloves, bay leaves and cinnamon barks where it dominates the spice aroma to minor parts in basil, nutmeg and lemon balm. Eugenol comprises the majority of clove bud essential oils.

Early research suggests eugenol exhibits therapeutic bioactive characteristics:

• Anti-inflammatory analgesic effects similar to common NSAIDs
• Local anesthetic qualities to numb tissue for dental/skin applications
• Antimicrobial against certain foodborne and plant pathogens
• Mosquito biting deterrent minimizing vector diseases

While typically not abundant enough to stand out aromatically, eugenol likely complements the terpene and cannabinoid profile through an “entourage” modulation of scent and effects even in trace quantities. More cannabis specific research into minor phytochemicals is still needed.
