Cymene is a monoterpenoid

Two isomers exist: para-cymene and ortho-cymene.

This terpenoid has an aromatic profile described as herbal, woody and slightly sweet with subtle citrusy impressions. Some also detect spicy, peppery hints in its scent. The aroma is modestly intense.

Natural sources of cymene include over 100 plant species spanning from coriander, basil and spearmint herbs to cardamom pods to varieties of pine and fir trees. It also occurs in volatile organic compounds emitted from stored potatoes contributing aroma changes upon sprouting.

While substantial research on the bioactivity and medicinal attributes of cymene is still relatively limited, early studies suggest:

• Possible antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects at certain doses
• Demonstrates antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens
• Exhibits larvicidal effects against mosquito populations

As an minor player, cymene likely interacts to influence cannabis’ overall terpene profile and may play a supporting role modulating bioactivity rather than take center stage. Further investigation into cannabis specificity of this terpenoid is certainly warranted.
